Chartreuse is a liqueur with a long and complex history. In 1605, an order of Carthusian monks in the French Alps received a manuscript that detailed the creation a so-called “Elixir of Long Life”. These monks eventually began to manufacture this elixir and eventually this drink became the Chartreuse liqueur that you can find in your liquor store today.
Chartreuse is quite unlike any of the bottles we have introduced so far. There are two varieties of Chartreuse: green, which is the better known of the two varieties and is very herbaceous and potent (55% abv), and yellow, which is milder in both botanical elements and alcohol content. Both varieties have a fairly strong and characteristic herbal taste with a fair amount of sweetness. We recommend that you purchase green Chartreuse first, as it is readily available and is a great introduction to the distinctive herbal blend.
Chartreuse is one of the favourite liqueurs of the Bottle by Bottle team. We hope you enjoy the cocktails that we post over the next couple weeks as much as we do.
