A scofflaw is a person who flouts the law, the title of a season 6 Seinfeld episode, and a delicious prohibition-era cocktail.
Speaking of Seinfeld, one night when we were making Scofflaws, we were looking up Seinfeld episodes and realized that almost every episode title would make a fine name for a cocktail. Because of this, we have decided to launch a new series on Bottle by Bottle: Cocktails About Nothing. We love creating originals and variations on classics, and we'll begin posting those on the blog with some fitting names. Watch out for The Kiss Hello, The Puffy Shirt, The Smelly Car, The Chinese Restaurant, and more, coming here soon.
The Scofflaw is an excellent showcase for the versatility of vermouth. The less sweet dry vermouth is offset by the addition of grenadine, with lemon juice (or lime, in some variations) and orange bitters to fill out the flavour.
What you need
- 1.5 oz. rye whiskey
- 1 oz. dry vermouth
- 0.5 oz. fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz. grenadine
- 2 dashes orange bitters
How it's made
Shake all the ingredients with ice, then strain into a coupe.
If you went hard on Ward 8s and you're out of grenadine, make some more with equal parts sugar and pomegranate juice by volume; add the sugar to the boiling juice and let simmer briefly before chilling.
