If you enjoyed our Whiskey Sour, you're going to love the Brown Derby. Technically still a sour, the Brown Derby swaps the base, citrus and sweetener to create a unique cocktail.
Named after a series of Los Angeles restaurants popular in the 1920s, the Brown Derby is a simple mix of three ingredients: bourbon, grapefruit juice and honey syrup. The cocktail is a staple of the modern cocktail resurgence. We use fresh grapefruit juice and honey syrup created using a 2:1 ratio of honey to hot water.
The Brown Derby is a sweet and citrusy cocktail, with the sweetness of bourbon and honey cutting through the grapefruit’s natural bitterness.
What you need
- 2 oz. bourbon
- 1 oz. grapefruit juice
- 0.5 oz. honey syrup
How it's made
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe. No garnish.
While honey syrup can be made in advance, we typically make it at a moment's notice. Simply mix two parts honey and one part water, then heat for a few seconds in a microwave. If you're using fresh grapefruit juice, make sure to strain it with a fine mesh strainer before shaking up the drink.
